BIG unveils Oceanix City

Sustainable floating city or techno-utopian pipedream?

At the first UN High-level Roundtable on Sustainable Floating Cities, BIG, Oceanix and MIT's Center for Ocean Engineering have unveiled their design of Oceanix City, a floating, habitable, off-shore environment in the event of rising sea levels. The concept consists of buoyant islands clustered together in groups of six to form villages on an archipelago home to 10,000 citizens. The project incorporates a host of cutting edge blue technologies that claim to meet humanity’s shelter, energy, water and food needs without killing marine ecosystems, but critics say it may just be another speculative project that would cater to the wealthy and fail to address the complexities and unknowns of climate change.
